Mental wellness matters. Taking care of our mental health helps us be more resilient and recover from whatever life throws at us. A terrible day can happen to anyone, but that does not indicate they have a horrible life. The crucial thing is how we respond to it and take care of our mental health. What matters at every stage of life is mental wellness. Our whole well-being revolves around mental wellness and affects our lives in various ways.

 

Why is Mental Health important?

According to studies, one in every five adults – 43.8 million people – suffers from mental disease, accounting for 18.5 percent of the overall population. As a result, mental health concerns are prevalent in our populace and impact everything we do.

Mental disease, if left untreated, leads to widespread disability. It prevents us from showing up for work every day, limits our abilities, and delays our progress.

When we ignore mental health, unfortunately, suicide rates climb. Mental health is crucial since it has an impact on all aspects of life. It influences our ability to deal with stress, adapt, and solve issues. Mental health affects our ability to be peaceful, prolific, and poised. Mental health is poured scorn on in our society. Because of the stigma and guilt associated with mental illness, people are less inclined to seek care. Self-consciousness is not required. It is not your fault that your brain is wired the way it is. Nonetheless, we act as though it is our fault and downplay its significance.

Those who have never dealt with mental illness are also misinformed. It is up to us to speak up for ourselves and educate others about our problems. We become “lived experience specialists.” There’s a range of how we perceive things. We may lose control at times, but we reclaim it in the end. Alternatively, we may be unable to cope with the extremes of high and low emotions. We may be someplace in the middle. If left untreated, things will fall apart. However, this does not imply that it is too late. Anything is conceivable. We give ourselves a fighting chance when we remember that.

 

The importance of mental health can be attributed to three factors.

 

  1. Affect on physical health: 

We would not hold someone responsible for cancer in their bodies if they had it. So, why do we stigmatize and blame mental illness in the brain? Mental illness is just as serious as any other disease, and it can take one’s life just as effortlessly. Suicidal ideation, for example, can progress to suicidal attempts if left untreated. If we solely think about our bodily health, we will be unbalanced people. The mind and body are intertwined. Stress is a common side effect of many mental illnesses, and it weakens the immune system. This translates to more sickness and an inability to cope. Our physical health can be harmed by stress and anxiety. Stress hormones released by the body due to worries increase heart rate and breathing, boost blood sugar, and send more blood to your arms and legs. Over time it affects your heart, blood vessels, muscles, and other systems. We begin to shut down when stress infiltrates our bodies. Dealing with stress is all that matters. Untreated mental health problems might lead to even more disintegration. Many people use drugs and alcohol as coping techniques, which hurts their general health and well-being. It creates a loop of destructive behavior when they don’t treat themselves well. This has an impact on their physical well-being and has the potential to worsen. Stress has an impact on one’s physical well-being and ability to care, which can lead to destructive practices. When we get to this point, it’s often only then; that we realize how vital mental health is. We must not disregard it, or else it will affect other aspects of our lives.

 

  1. End stigma and shame to lead a better life:

It’s critical to talk about mental health so that others can do the same. When we feel ashamed of ourselves, we believe we are broken or abnormal. When we think of ourselves in such a poor light, it undermines our ability to deal. Turning such feelings around is a part of the healing process. Our flaws do not imply that we are unworthy. When we recognize this, we may also assist others in changing their feelings and accepting themselves. This embarrassment breeds stigma. Humiliation encourages self-destructive behavior. Destructive actions lead to a decline in self-esteem. When we don’t talk about mental health and how important it is, stigma grows. When it boils down to it, mentally sick people require care.  People feel uncomfortable reaching out for help without awareness and breaking the stigma surrounding their condition. This reinforces the stigma and causes people to struggle and feel ashamed. We give anything more power when we don’t get to say anything. We take the power of emotion away by naming it in “Name It to Tame It,” a popular exercise about emotions. When we don’t talk about our feelings, they become stronger and have more control over our lives and the lives of others. When we talk to one other, the problem shrinks and loses its grip on our lives. We can set each other free by not being ashamed of our mental health. We reclaim power over our lives when we become real. We deny ourselves by ignoring the existence and value of mental health. In our daily lives, we lose our ability to solve problems and discover answers. “I am not my mental disease,” we can state without embarrassment. It does not define me. Because it is not my fault, I am not afraid to speak about it.” We empower ourselves and the world when we do this. We learn to pay attention to our triggers and warning signs so we don’t spiral, and we have more sympathy for others who are going through it. Overall, the world becomes more connected as a result of this. We help others when we help ourselves. We have the power to change the world by paying attention to it and making it a kinder, more loving environment. By admitting our difficulties, we can determine which ones need to be addressed, and we can share our experiences in doing so. We remove the embarrassment.

We could take over the world if we only realized how valuable we are. We are held back by our limiting views, which tell us that we are not normal, broken, or worthless.
